Sorry, no pound of flesh for you. (now with football)

Wed Aug 20, 2008 at 10:14:59 AM PDT

I realize everyone is desperately seeking revenge for the last eight years, but eventually we will have to come to terms with the fact that we are not going to see the current administration investigated or punished to any great extent.

What will happen is what ALWAYS happens. A few low level flunkies will take some heat and maybe even do some short stint in a country club prison. The real movers and shakers responsible for the reprehensible nature of the Bush Administration will be beyond the reach of justice.

The fact that they have broken the law is immaterial, and no amount of wishing and hoping, wailing and gnashing is going to change that fact. I realize this is a viciously unpopular stand at the moment, but I believe in beating the rush: Get. Over. It.

And you what the real kicker is? That's what is best for the United States.

Elitist convention party: what are you bringing?

Mon Aug 18, 2008 at 09:38:50 AM PDT

Some family, friends and I have decided to get together at my house to watch Obama's nomination acceptance speech. With a chuckle, we decided to make it an "elitist" event.

I'm calling on the DKos Kommunity to help us out.

Friday Diversion: Annoying Musical Acts (for Droogie)

Fri Jul 18, 2008 at 01:13:50 PM PDT

This diary is in the spirit of the true diversionary wit of fellow DKos citizen Droogie6655321, since he is busy with truly important things on this Friday. Forgive this pale imitation as the sincerest form of flattery. Hat's off to ya, Droog.

Today's topic: Most annoying musical acts.

I realize this is a cumbersome phrase, but I wanted to differential just plain bad from annoying (which is tastily subjective), and I didn't want to deal with the whole band/artist/group/duo/etc. differentiation. So "annoying musical acts" it is. I'll start the ball rolling with this list, in no particular order:

MCain still has a bigot bump on the horizon

Tue Jul 15, 2008 at 09:50:47 AM PDT

It’s fairly common knowledge around here that McCain’s campaign suffers from voter apathy on several different levels. Not only is the general electorate disaffected with Republicans in general, the conservative base is not really that excited about their candidate either.

I think this voter apathy will last just as long as it takes the racists and bigots to realize that Obama actually has a chance to win. I realize that on this site, we not only think Obama has a chance to win, we are counting on it. And Obama has a both a current lead and historical precedent to lend credence to his campaign and counterbalance the hurdles that come with being the first viable minority presidential candidate.

But that’s around here. Out there (among the great unwashed) there is a segment of the population that truly does not believe that a black man is a viable candidate for the presidency. Granted I live in Tennessee, which (thank the Almighty) is not representative of the entire nation. But the folks around where I live ARE representative of the bigoted segment of the population that has not come to grips with the idea of a non-white POTUS. And when they wake up, they’re going to be pissed.

SEX TALK!! Is Using McCain's Infidelity (alleged) Over the Line?

Fri Jul 11, 2008 at 01:58:01 PM PDT

Are we at the point where all is fair in politics and you throw the kitchen sink at your opponent? Or are there certain lines we shouldn't cross when it comes to impugning your opponents character?

Let's cut to the chase:
McCain's personal life is garnering a share of the spotlight lately. If you are so inclined, you can read about it here.

So, here are the questions:

Do his personal peccadilloes directly effect his ability to serve in an elected capacity?

Or are they acceptable fodder for taking down an opponent?

Does it speak to character, or is it character assassination?

The Left-Wing Noise Machine: O'Reilly Lite? Limbaugh Jr.? Or Something Better?

Thu Jul 10, 2008 at 11:30:20 AM PDT

As liberals, we take pride in not only being the antithesis to the right wing, but we like to think of ourselves as better than our conservative counterparts. We value truth, compassion, and intellect. We believe in the right to an opinion and the freedom to express it. We revile the typical right win smear machine and their propaganda tactics. All in all we have a fairly noble view of ourselves.

But is it true?

Could it be that we are just the yin to their yang? Is it possible that we are not the better half, but just the other half? Is the blogosphere of the left just the liberal equivalence to the conservative propaganda machine? I believe the answer is no, we are better than that. But that doesn’t mean we don’t have to guard against our baser instincts and the temptation to fight fire with fire.

'Ol "Blank Screen" Obama

Tue Jul 01, 2008 at 01:34:15 PM PDT

A cursory glance at any of the recent hot diaries will show innumerable examples of the disconnect between individuals on what Obama's stance is, was and should be. I'm no different, I have my personal view of what Obama stands for and how he should conduct his business. And so do you. The problem is the two may not be the same. The blank screen that served Obama so well in the primary is showing cracks around the edges.

During the primary, most of us remember Hillary lifting a quote from Obama's Audacity of Hope to pin him as a self described "black screen" where people paint their own desires, making him more attractive to a wide variety of people. At the time, this was viewed as lifting a passage out of context for pure political expediency. There is a somewhat different connotation in the entirety of the passage which Hillary was referring, but not much. Suffice it to say that Obama saw this coming, and credit where credit is due, Hillary was astute enough to point it out with an eye to future political endeavors. After the fact, it may turn out that Obama (and Hillary) were both right
